The student will only have one chance to take the exam.

Part I. Answer only 10 from the following list indicating "who, what, where, when, why, and significance" 10 Points Each

Part II. Answer all of the following. Each essay is worth 50 points.

Compare and contrast the living patterns of Northern, Central, and Southern California’s indigenous people before the arrival of the Spanish. In your essay make sure to address attire, religious practices, diet, and standards of living.

As a Franciscan priest living at Mission San Diego (1775) you are writing your daily diary entry attempting to explain why the neophytes rebelled against the padres. You pride yourself on being as objective as possible seeing both the benefits and negatives of mission life on all participants, so your entry should reflect a myriad of sentiments.

What rationale did the Spanish have for wanting to settle missions in Baja and Alta California? Who were some of the direct and ancillary participants in mission colonization and what-if any-benefits did they hope to attain?

In California, A History Prof. Rolle makes note of some troubles encountered by the crews of the Manila Galleons, which, inadvertently, contributed to later explorations and then settlements along California’s coast. What were these troubles and how as indirect agents of change did they lead to the growth of towns in Alta California?

Thank you for administering the examination for my student.
