Course Description:

Survey of American music from the Native Americans through modern times. Native American music, Jazz, Sacred Popular Music in the 19th and 20th centuries will be the focus of this course.

"American Music: A Panorama" by Lorenzo Candelaria and Daniel Kingman 3rd Concise Edition 4-CD Set to Accompany "American Music: A Panorama" 3rd Concise Edition

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

1. Understand and explain the value of the Arts and history of American music from the beginning to the present.

2. Carefully listen and analyze American music.

Benchmark Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, the student shall have the ability to analyze American music through careful listening and understand the historical and sociological effects of the development, censorship, and commercialization of traditional, folk, jazz, rock and current popular forms.

Through the observation of a musical performance, essays, projects, and discussion, analyze the historical and sociological affects of well as exam questions that will deal with the value of arts.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

l. Mid-term and Final----------One fourth  of the course grade

The Midterm will consist True/False, short answer and an essay which you will be taken online and the test is emailed to the instructor. The Final will consist of all information from the Midterm exam to the last day of class. All students will be required to take the Final.

ll. Discussion topics--------One fourth of the course grade

You are required to respond to the discussion at least once per discussion topic.

lll. Quizzes--------One fourth of the course grade

lV. Video Requirements--------One fourth of the course grade

Students are required to attend two concerts or watch three music videos during the semester. Fill out the concert and video reports when you are done.

By enrolling for this class, the assumption is that you possess the necessary skills to read at the college level, to enter and perform research on the internet, to email using proper email etiquette and to post to the discussions.

When emailing your instructor: (dbell@bcconline.com) include your full name. Send all email with the name of the course in the subject line and Lesson No. or the words: problem, question or comment. Many times I receive email with no name in the body of the email.  Sign all email with your name as registered at school, or else you will not receive a reply and your assignment will not be graded.

You must explain the problem in the subject line, i.e., MUSI 3 -- no research available. Email without an appropriate subject line will be deleted and will not be read. With the current high incidence of viruses and unsolicited email I automatically delete all email without appropriate subject lines.'

Remember I do not answer email on the weekends, so 48 hours response time do not include Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. If an email stating problem, help, or question in the subject line is sent on Monday through Thursday you can expect a response within 24-48 hours.  If an email stating problem, help, or question in the subject line is sent on the weekends there will be a longer turn around time, but the email will be answered by Tuesday of the following week. 

Email assignments will have a one week turnaround time, and you should not expect an answer to a successfully submitted and completed assignment before the end of the one week turnaround time period.  Receiving graded assignments or answers to your questions before the above stated timelines have passed does not guarantee that you will receive replies that quickly in the future. 

Online classes are NOT conducted via instantaneous transmission.  The above stated timelines apply to ALL students and ALL responses to your questions and concerns.

A posting place at the top of the discussion page indicates the instructor’s message board to you.
