Course Description and Objectives:
This course introduces the strategic and logical approach to managing an organization’s most valuable assets – people. Included in the course is a broad study of the nature and content of Human Resource Management (HRM) and continues by focusing on HRM functions such as employing people, developing their resources, utilizing, maintaining and compensating their services in tune with the job and organizational goals. Degree Applicable.
Objectives of the course are:
1. To develop competence in all aspects of managing people at work. 2. To understand thoroughly the legal aspects of managing people at work. 3. To develop in-depth knowledge in at least one area of HRM, as indicated by a written presentation. 4. To be able to assess the ethical implications of alternative courses of action in managing people at work.

Email Updates
One of the primary methods of contact in an online course is email. Your college is capable of extracting student names and email addresses from our registration system. The purpose of extracting this information is two fold. The information will be used by the instructor to remain in contact with the class in order to provide information necessary for the students' academic success. The information will also be used to send emails to the students from the college administration. The emails sent by the college administration will consist of links to course surveys which will be used to improve our online courses, important announcements for students, and links to college surveys, which will be used to satisfy requirements placed on the college by the California Community College Chancellor's Office. The college will not use this information to advertise any products and will not share student email addresses with any other organization. Discussion board questions will be closed to new entries on the Monday following the date of the original post. Be sure to make your entries on time to receive credit.
The Final Paper will be outlined in detail by the Midterm week to give you time to do research and prepare a document in MLA format. The assignment will not be accepted after the due date unless arrangements are made with instructor at least 2 weeks prior to due date. All papers are due by the last day of class as defined by Barstow College, NO EXCEPTIONS.
Exams:
The Midterm examination is open book/open note with objective and short answer questions. This exam is worth 200 points.
The Final is closed book/note and will follow the same format as the mid term. This test is worth 60 points and must be completed in order for you to receive a grade in the course.
Final Paper:
This assignment is very important to your career. It demonstrates your ability to gather data, analyze information, and draw an educated conclusion about an HR topic that you are interested in. This assignment must be completed in order for your to receive a grade in the course. It is worth 200 points.
The Final Exam and Final Paper are mandatory for a passing grade! Regardless of ones' point totals, these assignments must be completed in order to receive credit in this course.

I understand the midterm is open book and notes, is un-proctored, and consists of both multiple choice and short answer questions. The final is closed book and notes, is proctored, and follows the same format as the midterm. Finally, I understand the weekly discussion postings are worth 10 points each = 80 points total; weekly quizzes are worth 70 points each = 420 points total; the midterm is worth 200 points; the final paper is worth 200 points; and the final exam is worth 60 points; the maximum points allowable including discussion posts, quizzes, final paper and both exams is 960.

My policy is that "extra credit is a privilege, not a right;" therefore, there will only be one opportunity for extra credit. The details will be explained in Lesson 5 when the Final Paper instructions are given.
Proctoring of Exams:

Late Assignments:
Late assignments are not accepted unless arrangements are made at least 2 weeks prior to due date. Please submit your work on time thereby enhancing the possibility of receiving a passing grade.

By enrolling for this class, the assumption is that you possess the necessary skills to read at the college level, to enter and perform research on the internet, to email using proper email etiquette and to post to the discussions.
When emailing your instructor, dpasley@bcconline.com, include your full name. Send all email with the name of the course in the subject line and Lesson No. or the words: problem, question or comment. Many times I receive email with no name in the body of the email. Sign all email with your name as registered at school, or else you will not receive a reply and your assignment will not be graded.
You must explain the problem in the subject line, i.e., MGMT 1, Research 1 -- no research available. Email without an appropriate subject line will be deleted and will not be read. With the current high incidence of viruses and unsolicited email I automatically delete all email without appropriate subject lines.'
Remember I do not answer email on the weekends, so 48 hours response time do not include Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. If an email stating problem, help, or question in the subject line is sent on Monday through Thursday you can expect a response within 24-48 hours. If an email stating problem, help, or question in the subject line is sent on the weekends there will be a longer turn around time, but the email will be answered by Tuesday of the following week.
Email assignments will have a one week turnaround time, and you should not expect an answer to a successfully submitted and completed assignment before the end of the one week turnaround time period. Receiving graded assignments or answers to your questions before the above stated timelines have passed does not guarantee that you will receive replies that quickly in the future.
Online classes are NOT conducted via instantaneous transmission. Just as I am giving you a SEVEN day period to complete your work, I am to be given SEVEN days to reply to your assignments. In addition, the above stated timelines apply to ALL students and ALL responses to your questions and concerns.
