Basic Contest Requirements

  • No student may submit more than three entries per category.
  • Submissions will not be returned. Students should keep copies of entries.
  • Entries can be no longer than 10 double-spaced pages.
  • Research papers will not be accepted.
  • Entries must be written in English.
  • No teacher, instructor, or college student with a Bachelor's degree may enter.
  • Students must be currently registered in an area school. Local home schooled students may enter.
  • College students may have been registered in the previous semester.
  • All entries must be the original work of the writer

Submitting Entries

When Submitting a Hard copy

  • Originality must be attested to by signatures of the author and a parent or teacher.

  • All entries must be in ink, typed, or computer printed

  • The entry form must be attached to the back of the submission. 

  • Author’s name should NOT appear on the submission, only on the attached form.

  • Names, addresses, and telephone numbers must be printed clearly.

  • Submit to the Office of the President at Barstow Community College by contest deadline - 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22, 2012.

When submitting an electronic copy:

  • Name a parent or teacher to attest to originality must be submitted.

  • Entries will also be accepted electronically Online Entry Form.

  • Electronic submissions should be spellchecked and proofread before submission

  • Submit by contest deadline - 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22, 2012

Description of Categories

Non-Fiction: An expository essay or narrative memoir (no research papers)

Fiction: A short story, vignette or narrative

Poetry: Any original poem

 Judging

Entries will be judged on:

  • presentation,
  • originality,
  • clarity of expression,
  • organization,
  • literacy,
  • grammar
  • correctness

Judging Process:

  • Judges are local educators, writers, and qualified community members with a bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Judges read entries "blind." This means they never know who the author is until winners are announced.
  • All entries are read by two judges.
  • Any ties are read by a third reader.

Awards Ceremony

The Desert Heritage Writing Contest Awards Ceremony will be held on April 21, 2012, at 2:00 p.m.  in the Gym at Barstow Community College.  Winners will be notified by mail.

All award entries will be listed in a booklet which will be available at the Awards Ceremony.

Winning place entries (Third Place through Grand Prize) will be published in the booklet.
