Setting Up a New E-Mail Account

To follow these instructions, you can print them or minimize and restore the window. Double-click  Netscape or Internet Explorer on your desktop to open another browser window where you can work with your e-mail.

How to Read Instructions While Doing Your Work

There are basically two types of e-mail systems. They are e-mail applications and  web-based e-mail. E-mail applications may be Netscape Messenger, Outlook Express, Outlook, AOL e-mail, and Eudora. Examples of web-based e-mail are Hotmail and Yahoo.

To Set Up a New E-Mail Account:

Following are the steps to setting up a new, free  Hotmail e-mail account. If you already have an e-mail account, you can skip to Composing a Message.

  1. Click the Location text box at the top of the browser to highlight the current entry.
  2. Type http://hotmail.com to replace the highlighted entry and press the Enter key on your keyboard to go to the hotmail web site.
  3. Click the Sign Up Now! link to have a screen appear that gives you the Hotmail Terms of Agreement.
  4. Click the I Agree button to have a form appear that you must fill out to get a free e-mail account.
  5. Fill out the form.

When you type in your Sign-In name and password, type a name and password that has some special significance to you. An example of a Sign-In name is a combination of your first and last name, like mine (g_hend for Gloria Henderson). Since most of the common Sign-In names are already used, the Sign-In name that you enter may not be accepted and similar names may be suggested. You may select one of the suggestions provided for you after you type the Sign-In name you like.  Your password can be anything you will remember, such as your mother's name or a pet's name or part of your phone number. WRITE YOUR SIGN-IN NAME AND PASSWORD DOWN ON A PIECE OF PAPER AND KEEP IT! DON'T TELL ANYONE YOUR PASSWORD!

  6. Decide whether or not to subscribe to the free electronic magazines available through Hotmail when the screen appears by clicking the appropriate choices.
  7. Click the down triangle button on the right scroll bar until you see the bottom of the page.
  8. Click the Continue button to have the inbox for your new account open. This is where messages you receive will appear.

To Exit E-Mail

Since you have established an e-mail account, you can exit until you are ready to send or receive messages.

  1. Click the Sign out button at the top of the screen to log out of Hotmail automatically.
