BCCT 60C -- Mr. Eaves -- jeaves@bcconline.com -- Barstow Community College

Session One

The study guide does not replace reading the textbook and checking the blackboard for updated information. Rather, it is intended to serve as a guide to focus attention on specific areas. While the workbook activities are not assigned as material to be submitted, the Instructor STRONGLY RECOMMENDS completing the activities as an invaluable study method.

Syllabus Review

Read over the syllabus and pay attention to the grading procedures. Discuss one topic to be covered in the class you have any prior knowledge of. If you have no knowledge of any of the topics that will be covered in this course then discuss a topic that you think will be beneficial for you and your current/ future job.

Discussions and questions in the on-line environment are not necessarily between the instructor and the student; rather, conversation is between the entire class. Therefore, when a question is presented, all class members are encouraged to respond. In most sessions, students are required to post at a minimum of twice per week, this is the requirement. The instructor is a facilitator of the information; students are required to participate in each session. The instructor will initiate conversation, participate in ongoing discussion, and provide all the necessary tools for student success. However, the real learning process takes place in the discussions with the entire class.

Types of Roofs

Roofs are built on every building that is going to be occupied by people for living or working. There is an industry standard that uses seven main types on buildings. Many of these roofs are very similar to one another but require different layout methods. Within a roof system there are special items that need to be included to tie the wall and roof systems together. One item is the hurricane straps needed in Florida or other hurricane prone areas. Figure 1 on page 7.2 shows each of the types of roofs.

What are some other things that might need to be placed in a roof of a multi-story building or in an area that could get an earthquake?
