Welcome!
Architecture, sculpture, paintings, ceramics, and decorative arts produced between the Renaissance though the Modern times will be covered. Chronology of significant events will be understood through the appreciation, interpretation and analysis of works of art produced during specific times. Knowledge of the political, economic and sociological conditions of any given period will contribute to the understanding of the practices, traditions and beliefs of a given culture. Through this course, students will have the opportunity to appreciate the worlds finest works of art illustrated in your textbook, displayed in world famous museums and art accessible "thought" web links. A self-guided visit to a museum of your choice will be encouraged during the course.

Course Description: Understanding of the resources and value of the arts and the significance of taste and style. History of painting, sculpture and architecture from Gothic Art to the present. Degree Applicable. UC/CSU (CAN Art 4)
General Course Description:
Survey of Visual Arts from the Renaissance through the Modern time period.
There is no prerequisite for this course.

Course objectives:
Having successfully completed the course, the student will be able to:
1. Identify major works of art from Renaissance to the present time. 2. Recognize styles and themes in art. 3. Increase art vocabulary and the ability to describe, analyze and interpret objects of art. 4. Develop skills in comparison and contrast. 5. Evaluate, analyze, and critic art through participation in discussions. 6. Appreciate and evaluate art presented in local museums (extra credit paper) and demonstrate understanding of the art in writing.
Objectives will be pursued through observation of works of art, discussions, use of links and Museum self-guided tour.

Tests:
All students must take two Online midterms and a proctored final. The tests are worth 100 points each, for a total of 300 possible test points.

Note:
Tests will be given and taken down on scheduled dates and times. It will not be possible to take the test once it has been removed from posting. If you have any conflicts taking place on the test posting dates, you must inform the instructor in advance in order to avoid missing the test and getting an F grade. E-mail and inform the instructor of any problems you may have regarding the test due date, or any other problems regarding the tests.
Online tests will be posted normally four days before the due date. The final will be posted on the final scheduled date.

Quizzes:
There will be four quizzes given during this course. The quizzes will be based on assigned reading material and will consist of ten questions. Each quiz will be worth 20 points for a total of 80 possible points. Please read lesson schedule included in the syllabus. Quizzes will be given and taken down on scheduled dates. It will not be possible to take the quiz once it has been removed from posting.

Discussions and Attendance:
Attendance will be recorded by completion of one weeks discussion over the material covered for that week. Discussion posting must be done on schedule, keeping up with the lessons in order of the schedule (i.e., discussion must relate to the scheduled lesson for that particular week). Late discussions will not be accepted. Note: Once the week for a particular discussion has ended, I note those students who have participated that week and I do not go back to that particular discussion. Therefore, it is important not to be late with discussions. Posting of at least five discussions (any from each lesson) during the course will be required in order to earn the maximum 20 points.

Grading System
The grade for this course will be based on a 100 point scale.
90 - 100 = A
79 - 89 = B
68 - 78 = C
57 - 67 = D
0 - 56 = F
The points for quizzes and discussions will be combined and the total averaged with tests.

Final Exam Proctored Final Test July 23 through July 29th at 3 p.m. No final test will be accepted after 3:00 PM. of July 29. Specifics regarding Proctored Final will be posted on posting board.
