General Course Description:
Survey of the Visual Arts from the Renaissance through the Modern time period.
Course Objectives:
Students will
gain an understanding and overview of the religious, political, historical,
cultural, aesthetic, and psychological functions of art from this period.
Students will
demonstrate their ability to describe, formally analyze, and interpret major
works of this period through written and threaded discussion exercises.
Students will
discover art resources in their local area and incorporate their
understanding of the materials presented in written critiques.
Students will
learn research skills and develop techniques for exploring the internet for
art related materials from this period.
Students will
learn techniques and methods for conducting art historical research.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Define Student Learning Outcomes of this Course:
Students will be able to understand and explain the value of the Arts and the history of the art from the Gothic to the present. Students will specifically be able to:
1. Debate what is and what is not art.
2. Discuss the intellectual, political and economic atmosphere that made the Early Renaissance and its major contributions in painting, sculpture and architecture.
3. Decide who was the perfect High Renaissance artist.
4. Define Mannerism and discuss each of its major phases.
5. Compare and contrast the styles and major contributions in painting, sculpture and architecture of the late Gothic and Northern Renaissance.
6. Review the Italian Baroque and its major artists and achievements.
7. Discriminate between the Baroque in Holland and Flanders.
8. Differentiate between the developments in England and France during the Baroque period.
9. Consider if Neoclassicism and Romanticism are part of one movement or if they represent two different styles.
10. Analyze Realism and Impressionism and discuss their major accomplishments.
11. Judge whether Post-Impressionism is a development from Impressionism or a separate movement.
12. Evaluate 20th century painting, sculpture and architecture.
13. Examine the major trends in photography.
14. Argue the importance of Post-Modernism.
15. Explain recent trends and the future of art.

Final-6 page Term Paper. The 6 page term paper should contain 2 pages of biography of one artist who lived and worked during the period we are studying. Select 2 works of art from that artist and write 2 pages of description, formal analysis, and interpretation for each work of art. The paper should contain a bibliography with at least 6 sources. Use MLA citation guidelines.
